I live in Phoenix where the weather is good and many people ride motorcycles and bicycles. I ride a bicycle and last summer had a little crash coming down South Mountain at 35mph. My helmet was caved in on the back and was cracked through in seven places. I use the helmet as a demonstration when I talk to kids about riding. It always amazes me when I see all the motorcycle riders in our town not wearing motorcycle helmets. It's just plain stupid not to wear one. Fortunately, most of the bicycle riders you see are wearing bike helmets.  Since you can get discount bike helmets for next to nothing, there really isn't any excuse not to wear one.  Why do so many motorcyclists think it is OK to ride without helmets and why are their families not insisting that they wear one? Why are we required to wear seat belts in this state, but not to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle? You can find used helmets for sale or discount motorcycle helmets and if you are worrying about not being "cool" you can even get Harley-Davidson bike helmets.
