Many states now have mandatory motorcycle helmet laws not only for bike riders but also for motor cyclists as well. The debate rages on as to whether wearing motorcycle helmets should be enforced to protect the rider from head injuries or if it should be left up to the personal choice of the rider. Many motorcycle helmet advocates state that these laws are necessary to protect the rider in case of an accident in which the rider could suffer a devastating brain injury or death. While yes this is true, my question is other than ones self, who is harmed if we choose not to wear motorcycle helmets? Should we be forced to wear a jacket in the off chance that we could catch pneumonia and die if we don't wear one? Yes I acknowledge that motorcycle helmets can potentially save lives, but I feel the choice should be up to each individual rider. Especially since most accidents involving motorcycles are not caused by the driver of the bike, but on the carelessness of the driver of the car that hits them. Hmm, maybe we should make all car drivers wear signs that warn motor cyclists of the danger of potentially stupid car drivers rather than force motorcycle helmets upon its riders. In the video below this Harley-Davidson rider makes a fair argument for the choice to wear a motorcycle helmet or not. I believe we already have enough laws telling people what they can and cannot do in all areas of our lives . This is AMERICA!! FREEDOM of choice is our right and if a motorcycle rider chooses not to wear a helmet then leave them be. If you do choose to wear a helmet that does not mean you are any less of a true motorcycle rider! Be safe and wear a good quality motorcycle helmet.
