The government is thinking about tightening up the rules on motorcycle helmets. Big surprise huh?? Inside Timpanogos Harley Davidson Motorcycle in Lindon, employee Candy Zamora showed me a table full of motorcycle helmets. "You should have a DOT-approved helmet no matter when you ride," she said. This week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, who rides a Harley Davidson motorcycle and has been in an accident credits her helmet with saving her life, proposed rules to strengthen the tests that helmets must pass to get Department of Transportation (DOT) approval. The department wants new tamper-proof DOT labels on helmets to cut down on the number of novelty helmets, which aren't much more than plastic without padded protection. "You're wearing what we call a brain bucket when you're wearing a helmet that's not DOT approved," Zamora said. In some states adult motorcycle riders are required to wear helmets, and Zamora says too often people toss on non-tested novelty helmets because they're lightweight and look cool. Stupid and not the type of helmet that is going to protect your skull computer in a crash.
